History of the pyramid
The origins of Christmas pyramids go back to the Middle Ages. At that time, it was common practice in southern and western Europe to collect evergreen branches and hang them in the house to dispel the darkness during the dark and cold winter months. In Northern and Eastern Europe, candles were traditionally used for this purpose. The Christmas pyramid eventually combined these two traditions and became a symbol of Christmas celebrations.
The name “Christmas pyramid” originated when the Napoleonic expedition in Egypt brought pictures of the pyramids to Europe at the end of the 18th century. Eventually, they were also brought to the Ore Mountains, where they reminded people of mining tunnels.
