Miffy History
Miffy was “born” in 1955. During a holiday in Egmond aan Zee, Dick Bruna told his eldest son Sierk a bedtime story every night about a white rabbit that roamed the garden of the holiday cottage. That rabbit became the inspiration for Miffy. While her father, Dick, was drawing, Miffy appeared on paper. Because he preferred drawing a dress to pants, he turned Miffy into a girl. For the first few years, Miffy resembled a stuffed toy, with rather clumsy ears.
From 1963, when the books began appearing in a square format, she resembled the Miffy we know today. She looks at the reader with her black eyes, has two tight, pointed ears, and lovely chubby cheeks. Starting with the book “Miffy’s Dream” (1979), her ears and face became somewhat rounder and more balanced. Aside from her body becoming rounder and plumper, as in “Miffy in the Tent” (1995), not much changed during these years. Only in 2001 did the proportions between her head and body change slightly in “Miffy the Ghost,” and she began to look more like a toddler. Since the arrival of a baby in “Little Fluff” (2003), Miffy has become a real toddler bunny as a big sister.
Popular
Miffy is the most famous and popular of the characters from Dick Bruna’s books worldwide. He has also written the most books about her (more than 30). She appeals to children all over the world and gives them a warm and comfortable feeling of security. Many children identify with Miffy and her adventures. She is uncomplicated and innocent, positive, and open to new experiences.
Name Miffy
The name ‘Miffy’ is derived from rabbit. For anyone who speaks Dutch, this is a perfectly logical name, but abroad it’s different. Because the word ‘rabbit’ is different in all languages and ‘Miffy’ is also very difficult to pronounce in many other countries, our Miffy has been given a different name abroad. One that has no special meaning, but is easy to pronounce in all languages: Miffy. Miffy used to have a different name in each country (‘le petit lapin’ in France and ‘kleintjie’ in South Africa, for example), but since 1996, she has been called ‘Miffy’ everywhere outside the Netherlands.
